Swim for Life & Lifesaving Instructor

These leadership courses provide candidates with theory, knowledge and skill and practice to teach and certify in the following Lifesaving Society programs and awards:

Swim for Life Instructor 

  • Swim for Life Parent & Tot
  • Swim for Life Preschool
  • Swim for Life Swimmer
  • Swim for Life Adult Swimmer
  • Swim for Life Fitness Swimmer

Lifesaving Instructor 

  • Canadian Swim Patrol Program: Rookie Patrol, Ranger Patrol, and Star Patrol levels
  • CPR and AED
  • Bronze Star
  • Bronze Medallion - **Mentorship required to become Examiner
  • Bronze Cross - **Mentorship required to become Examiner

These courses may be offered together as a 44 hour Swim for Life and Lifesaving Instructor course or separately.  If taken seperatly then Swim for Life Instructor must be taken first.

Combined Lifesaving Instructor/ Swim Instructor Course Minimum 44 hours Up to 12 candidates
Swim Instructor Course (stand-alone) Minimum 24 hours Up to 12 candidates
Lifesaving Instructor Course (stand-alone) candidates must have Swim for Life Instructor previously) Minimum 24 hours Up to 12 candidates


Prerequisites: 15 years old and Bronze Cross award (need not be current)
Minimum number of candidates: 4 candidates. This allows for skills such as team building, leadership, communication, evaluation, and problem-solving to be developed and evaluated in a practical learning environment. A minimum of 4 peer teaching sessions are also required; candidates are “students” for each other.

Required Candidate Books: Canadian Lifesaving Manual; Swim for Life/Lifesaving Instructor Package (i.e. Swim for Life Award Guide, Teaching Swim for Life manual, Swim Patrol Award Guide, Bronze Medal Award Guide and Instructor Manual, CPR/AED Manual)
Taught and Certified By: Current Lifesaving Trainer
Evaluation: This is a pass or fail award.
Award Recognition: Certification card
Expiry Date: Exactly 2 years from the date of certification (i.e. date on certification card) Combined Lifesaving Instructor/ Swim Instructor Course Minimum 44 hours Up to 12 candidates
Swim Instructor Course (stand-alone)
Recertification: Lifesaving Instructors/Swim for Life Instructors recertify through the Society’s professional development credit system. Forms found on Instructor Dashboard.
